Rent GN NetTest PMD-440 Polarization Mode Dispersion

Details

PMD440

NetTest’s PMD440 measures a form of pulse dispersion which can cause the optical receiver to be unable to interpret the signal correctly and result in high bit error rates. PMD can dramatically decrease a fiber optic network’s performance, particularly those networks operating at high data rates such as OC192 (STM-64) or OC768 (STM-256).

Benefits

Allow customers to provide a high data rate on fiber
Provides pre-qualification of existing spans for upgrades
Certify cable quality and verify installation practices

Detailed Product Description
Polarization Mode Dispersion, or PMD, is a form of pulse dispersion which can cause the optical receiver to be unable to interpret the signal correctly and result in high bit error rates. PMD can dramatically decrease a fiber optic network’s performance, particularly those networks operating at high data rates such as OC192 (STM-64) or OC768 (STM-256).

In addition to the inherent, random polarization properties of fiber, stress and other environmental effects (such as changes in temperature) will directly affect the severity of PMD, causing it to change over time. In fact, the amount of PMD present when a fiber is first drawn is likely to differ from the PMD present after cabling or placement. PMD’s varying nature makes it crucial to test installed fiber before upgrading to higher data rates or installing new high data rate systems.

Taking PMD measurements is easy.
The PMD440’s ease of use allows accurate measurements to be obtained with minimal training. The light source is placed at the far end of the fiber under test, while the receiver and PC are located at the measurement site. Continuous network monitoring of suspect cables is available via the PMD440’s remote testing capability.
